JOHN BROWNE ...
Caps off to our repeat Volunteer of the month John Browne. John continues to contribute excellent and innovative mechanical ideas and fixes and he's brought all linds of equipment and parts aboard. John is turning into a fine addition to our permanent, professional deck and line handling crew. And he never fails to show up early, stay late and do the hardest and dirtiest jobs.

Just show up... (All are WELCOME)
Twenty eager volunteers arrived for the very first Fireboat Harvey Work Day held in February 2001. They keep coming back - and now they bring friends.
From housewives, social workers, and firefighters to tugboat enthusiasts, registered nurses, and desk jockeys, Harvey volunteers come in all stripes. Everyone has something special to offer and everyone can help. We need you all and appreciate your contributions toward helping the boat and the cause.
To top off a day spent painting and polishing above decks, or up to their necks in grease down below, volunteers share pizza or BBQ and head out for a boat ride.
In the words of a very grimy Billy Gibbons after a day in the engine room replacing brushes: "I drive a desk all day. This is exactly what I needed!'

New volunteer programs and training
This year our volunteer training programs will include:
- Deck training, including line handling, basic safety, man overboard routines, knot tying and shipboard procedures.
- Preparing and protecting exposed steel (not as simple as it sounds). And we have a lot of this to do.
- Welding, including removing and replacing plate, ribs, decks and overheads.
- Riveting - a disappearing art -- in conjunction with Darren Vigilant and tug Bertha.
- Special engine room projects including rebuilding Diesels, mufflers, etc.
- History of John J. Harvey for tour guides including the basics of history of the harbor, the boat and its systems.
- For experienced volunteers, we will also be offering on-board fire-fighting and CPR.
To sign up for training, email volunteer@fireboat.org
