23 August 2004One forthe books-A pair of historic vessels visited Catskill this week, docking at Catskill Point. The fireboat John J. Harvey was joined by the tugboat Urger on Thursday and Friday, and was open for visits by the public as part of the Hudson Valley Regional Festival. Above, an avowed fan of the John J. Harvey, Palenville resident Tom Story, left, collects signatures from owner Tim Ivory, right, and crewmember John Doswell, center. The two are signing a book about the famous fireboat written by Maria Kalman and published by G.P. Putnam's Sons. The Harvey served for many decades in New York City following its commission in 1931, was retired in 1994, and then called out of retirement during the 9/11 disaster. The Urger, built in 1901, served on the NYS canal system, working the Erie and Champlain components until the 1980s. Both vessels now serve as floating classrooms, providing a taste of living history for visitors. Photo by Claude Haton.Read more articles... |
